As students, every semester someone representing the studying abroad programs go around to each class pitching all the different programs that are offered. I have never actually studied abroad but have always been interested. So, I decided to create a pros and cons list not only to help me but help anyone that may be in the same boat as me.

PRO

Immerse yourself in different cultures

  • Getting to experience cultures in a way that you’ve never experienced. Doing this could maybe be a way of learning a new language. Or cooking things you’ve never even dreamed of cooking. Overall future employers could find that cultured you could benefit the company in some way.

CON

Cost a ton of money

  • This is what holds me back most. I would love to go out there and travel across the world to learn but I am already in enormous debt. There are some programs that financial aid will cover. But something to always remember is that financial aid is not free. You got to pay that money back eventually.

PRO

Make a ton of new friends

  • Now if you’re a hermit and maybe do not like to socialize, then maybe this isn’t the program for you. I, on the other hand, love meeting new people. When you study abroad, most the time you go with people you haven’t met. This could be a great thing not only for your social life but is a good way to network for future jobs. Also, whenever you study abroad you meet new people at certain companies who could be your future employer if you make a great impression. Networking is everything.

CON

Missing home

  • Although there are multiple times to make new friends, traveling to another country where you don’t know anyone can be extremely daunting. You can just go to your parents if you want some dinner. If you have a significant other, then this could cause some turmoil in the relationship. Overall, you may miss people but they will always be there if they love you.

PRO

It is something to talk about

  • People love hearing about people’s trip and what all happened. When you study abroad you’re gone for a while. This gives you the opportune time to talk about all the adventures you. You can also talk about how much you learned on your amazing journey.

Studying abroad is something everyone should if they have the opportunity and money to do it. Going away to learn and experience new things can open many doors in the future. So, why not go ahead and make that trip?!
