Throughout my college career, I have had a couple roommates and I've lived in all different kinds of places. Fortunately, I have had hardly any roommate issues but have always heard about the horrors that come along when you have a terrible roomie. Living with someone from a different background than you can be extremely tough. None of us are brought up the same and we are all human so fighting is bound to happen. But if you are wanting some hints on how to have successful relationship with your roommate, then follow the tips below.

Pick your battles

This is so important. There is no need to let little things get in the way of you and your roomies relationship. When you get upset or annoyed, stop and take a deep breath and ask yourself if an argument is worth it? If it's something that won’t matter in a day, then just let it go.

Freaking communicate!

The phrase “communication is key” is something you should live by. If you’re having friends over, then be a good roommate by giving them a heads up. Being blindsided by random people at your house is no fun. Don’t buy a pet without talking with your roommate first. Don’t finish their milk unless you ask if it’s okay.

Respect your roommates’ things

Their closet is not a free-for-all. Borrowing things without permission is rude and is technically stealing. All you must do is ask. You may think they won’t care but you never know.

Clean up after yourself

You dirty the dish, then you clean the dish. If you had friends over for drinks and there is a mess clean it up. Keep your room however you want it. But in common areas like the kitchen or living room try and pick up after yourself. There is nothing more annoying than feeling like you’re constantly cleaning someone else’s mess.

Have separate lives outside of each other

You guys are going to be spending a lot of time together but this doesn’t mean you guys have do everything together. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Give each other space.

Living with someone will always have its challenges but it can also be extremely beneficial, especially during those college years. Things will not always be perfect. Just remember everyone is human and we all make mistakes. Do not be too hard on your roommate and they won’t be too hard on you.
